SHHA 2013 Conference & Tradeshow

We attended the Sasakatchewan Hotel & Hospitality Assn. (SHHA) 2013 Conference & Tradeshow this week. It’s always nice to get to Regina to support the branch office out there, and see the many great things going on in Regina. The show was a success with many great exhibits and an opportunity to meet the many people that keep the hotel and hospitality industry vibrant.

One of the things that really stood out for me at the show was the number of Manitoba exhibitors in attendance. The ability for many businesses to be able to service customers over a larger geographical area is obviously getting easier in today’s technological world, and from our own experience being able to offer the same consistently good service to multi provincial restaurant, hotels, and many other businesses is being adopted.

As I drove into Regina, I was amazed at the new construction, and buildings that have gone up since I was there last. Saskatchewan has figured out how to grow their economy.

The Ansul Pacesetter and Diamond Awards

A couple of weeks ago Stuart Crabbe of Ansul Canada was in our office certifying us to recondition and recharge Ansul cartridges. I was so proud of my staff for creating this opportunity that I had to write about it in “Ansul Certified Cartridge Refilling”.

That was only part of the reason Stuart was in Manitoba. He had also been collecting some hardware that he felt he should deliver in person. It was my pleasure to receive our third Pacesetter award! This award is given when an Ansul distributor out paces the sales targets given to them in a fiscal year. In tough economic climates this can be a difficult accomplishment. The credit goes to both “the herd” for their dedication to providing professional service and sales, as well as to our customers who understand the value of high quality products.

Stuart also presented us with our second Diamond Award! This award may seem similar to the Pacesetter it is different in that it is based upon sales volumes for a fiscal year. The Diamond Award also comes with some swag that includes free training, Ansul gear, and a few other goodies. Of over fifty Ansul distributors across Canada less than ten received a Pacesetter Awards, and only seven met the Diamond award requirements. We are the only Ansul distributor in Manitoba to have received these awards this year.

While these awards are great to receive, the real awards are given to us every day by our customers. They are given in the forms of repeat business, referrals to their friends and the help and support that businesses give each other to operate in a professional manner.

It’s for these daily awards that I truly am thankful.

Counterfeit Fire Equipment

Download Attachment...

I heard of several things in this world being counterfeit, money, Winnipeg Jets Gear, but who would have ever thought of counterfeit fire equipment? Apparently someone has and by doing so has put countless lives at stake should their fakes fail to perform. Can you spot the fakes?

There are two fire extinguisher companies that have had their extinguishers copied. Amerex and Buckeye have both suffered from this illegal activity.

The attached Safety Alert states that “Their capability to extinguish fire is unproven; they may be charged with a powdery substance that is not a fire extinguishing agent.”

Tyco has suffered similarly with their sprinkler heads being counterfeited as well. I just read the public notice “UL and Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) Warn of Counterfeit Fire Sprinkler” in it they say “The Fire Sprinkler has not been evaluated by UL or LPCB to the appropriate Standards for Safety and it is unknown if the Fire Sprinkler complies with any safety requirements.” Follow the link for the full description.

If you are unsure of the products installed in your building I strongly recommend you call your fire protection service provider. Ensure they are aware of the situation, have a plan for disposal, and have people trained who can recognize these fakes.

Cabela’s Opens In May

Another win for the Bison Fire Protection Sprinkler Division!  Today we are turning over the installation of the fire protection system at the new Cabela’s.   This installation was a challenge to design, and engineer. There are 2 wet sprinkler systems throughout the building as well as a dry system for the attic and piping that had to rise to cover a large vault.  Our installation crew also did a fantastic job getting into tight places and installing the pipe that had to function and appear in an aesthetic manner.  Cabela’s takes a lot of pride in their various murals and displays and didn’t want sprinkler piping running through the middle of them. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, because I think our sprinkler system looks fantastic!

Each automatic sprinkler system, the valves and piping are also carefully labelled and identified to allow ease of service in the future.  The onsite training we provided to the staff at Cabela’s included regular maintenance, service intervals, and an overview of the installation binder and warranty.
